Frame Weight Calculator — Total Framed Artwork Weight
Estimate the total weight of a framed piece including glass, backing and frame.
How We Calculate This
How Frame Weight Estimation Works
Total = Frame + Glass + Backing + Mat + Artwork
Frame weight comes from the moulding perimeter (2 × (width + height)), scaled by the profile face width and its linear density — about 0.15 g/mm for a 30 mm wood profile, more for aluminium and gilded mouldings, which are denser.
Glazing, backing, mat and artwork are areal weights multiplied by the inner glazing area. Soda-lime glass is 2.5 kg/m² for every 1 mm of thickness, so 2 mm glass is 5 kg/m²; 2 mm acrylic is about 2.4 kg/m². Standard 1.4 mm mountboard is roughly 0.8 kg/m², MDF backing about 1.2 kg/m², and paper artwork around 0.2 kg/m².
