What height should I hang pictures?

The standard gallery convention is to position the centre of the artwork at 1500 mm (150 cm) from the floor, which is roughly average eye level. In homes with high ceilings you may raise this slightly. For groups of pictures, align the centres rather than the tops.

How do I hang heavy pictures on plasterboard?

For frames over 5 kg on plasterboard, use toggle bolts or spring toggles that spread the load behind the board. For very heavy items (over 15 kg), locate a wooden stud with a stud finder and screw directly into it. Two fixing points are safer than one for heavy frames.

How much wire slack should I allow?

When the wire is pulled taut to support the frame, its peak should sit only about 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) below the top of the frame — this small fixed slack, not one-third of the frame height, is what determines where the hook goes. Mount the D-rings about one-third of the way down each side; tying the wire too tight strains the rings, while too much slack makes the frame tilt easily and pushes the hook awkwardly low.

How long should I cut the hanging wire?

Cut the wire to roughly 1.5-2 times the frame width. The extra length over the taut span between the D-rings lets you wrap and twist the wire securely around both rings. For a 500 mm wide frame, cut about 750-1000 mm.

How Picture Hanging Calculation Works

Hook height = Eye level + ½ frame height − attachment drop

The calculator places the centre of the artwork at eye level (default 1500 mm, the gallery standard), so the frame top sits at eye level + half the frame height. From there it works out the hook position:

D-rings with wire: the hook sits where the taut wire peaks — a small fixed ~40 mm below the frame top (1-2 inches per STAS / AS Hanging), not a third of the frame height.
D-rings only: the rings rest directly on the hook, so the hook sits at the D-ring height (default one-quarter down from the top).

Wire length is cut to roughly 1.5-2× the frame width — the taut span across the rings plus enough to wrap and twist both ends. The anchor recommendation follows the frame weight and your UK wall type.
