Where should I position D-rings on the frame?

D-rings should be positioned one-third of the way down from the top of the frame back. This ensures the frame hangs flush against the wall and slightly tilts forward at the top for better viewing angle.

What size D-ring do I need?

These tiers are conservative per-pair ratings (two rings sharing the load): No. 1 (small single-hole) up to 4 kg, No. 2 (medium) up to 10 kg, No. 3 (large two-hole) up to 20 kg, and a No. 4 plus strap hanger above that. For context, suppliers rate a single-hole D-ring at roughly 10-11 kg (20-25 lb) and a two-hole at around 18 kg (40 lb) per ring, but build in a 1.5-3× safety factor for the hook and wall fixing. For very heavy frames, use strap hangers or a split (French cleat) batten instead of D-rings.

Should I use one or two D-rings?

Always use two D-rings — one on each side of the frame, at the same height, one-third down from the top. This distributes weight evenly and keeps the frame level. Single-point hanging (one D-ring at centre top) is only for very light frames.

Wire between the rings, or hook each ring direct to the wall?

Wire is more forgiving — it hangs from a single central hook so the frame can be nudged level and the apex tilts the top forward slightly. Hooking each ring onto its own screw is more secure and sits the frame dead flat, but you must set both wall fixings level and exactly the ring-spread distance apart. What screws should I use?

Use pan-head screws that are shorter than the frame moulding depth (to avoid poking through the front). 12 mm screws for small frames, 16-20 mm for larger frames. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting.

What wall hook should I use?

Picture pins work for frames under 5 kg on plasterboard. Hardwall hooks work on brick and plaster. For heavy frames (over 5 kg), use wall plugs and screws into masonry or locate a wooden stud.
