Edition Size Calculator — Plan Your Print Run
Plan your print edition with numbered prints, artist proofs and printer proofs.
How We Calculate This
How Edition Planning Works
Total impressions = Edition + Artist proofs + Printer proofs + HC
The calculator totals all impressions needed, shows correct notation format, and calculates potential revenue from the sale edition. Non-sale proofs increase the total printing needed but maintain the numbered edition value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Editions typically range from 10-100 prints. Small editions (10-25) are more collectable and command higher prices. Larger editions (50-100) are more accessible. The edition size should reflect the technique — etching plates wear, linocuts last longer.
The convention is up to 10% of the edition size. For a 50-print edition, 5 artist proofs is standard. APs are marked A/P and are traditionally kept by the artist but can be sold, often at a premium.
Printer proofs (P/P) are given to the master printer or print workshop that helped produce the edition. Typically 1-3 are standard. They are not for sale and are marked P/P 1/3, etc.
Hors commerce (H/C) prints are outside the commercial edition, usually given to galleries, exhibitions or competitions. They are marked H/C and should not exceed 10% of the edition. They are technically not for sale.
Number as fraction: print number / edition size (e.g., 7/50). APs are marked A/P 1/5. The numbering does not indicate printing order — all prints in an edition should be identical in quality.
