How Tablet Area Mapping Works

The calculator compares tablet and monitor aspect ratios. If they differ, it constrains the tablet active area to match the monitor ratio, ensuring circles stay circular. The mapping efficiency shows how much tablet area is utilised.
It also reports the linear scale (monitor width ÷ mapped active width) — how far the cursor travels on screen per cm of pen movement — and the effective on-screen resolution (tablet LPI ÷ linear scale). Comparing that against your monitor's pixel density flags whether the tablet or the display is the limiting factor for fine detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
If your tablet and monitor have different aspect ratios, drawing a circle on the tablet produces an oval on screen. Matching the active area to the monitor ratio eliminates this distortion, though it means some tablet area goes unused.
Mapping efficiency shows what percentage of your tablet surface is actually used after aspect ratio matching. A Wacom Intuos (16:10) on a 16:9 monitor uses about 90% of the tablet area — the remaining 10% is unused.
Using the full area gives maximum drawing space but may cause distortion if ratios differ. Most digital artists prefer aspect-ratio-matched mapping for accurate drawing, accepting a slightly smaller active area.
This is a linear ratio: each cm of pen movement across the mapped active area covers this many cm on screen. A factor of 2-4x is comfortable for most artists. Very high ratios (10x+) make precise work difficult because tiny pen movements jump far on screen. Very low ratios (around 1x) feel natural but require large arm movements. The calculator reports the linear scale (monitor width ÷ mapped active width), not the area ratio.
The active area is the pressure-sensitive drawing surface, not the total tablet size. Check your tablet specifications or measure the area that responds to pen input. Common sizes: Small ~15 x 10 cm, Medium ~22 x 14 cm, Large ~31 x 22 cm.
