How We Calculate This
Weight is the sum of four components: frame = perimeter × linear bar weight, and canvas, gesso and paint = stretched area × their areal weight. The default areal figures below are derived estimates, not measured product specs — adjust them under Advanced if you know your exact materials.
- Frame: 0.15 kg/m for bars ≤20mm deep, 0.35 kg/m for deeper bars (estimated from a kiln-dried pine stretcher profile ~38×18mm × pine density ~480 kg/m³ ≈ 0.33 kg/m).
- Canvas: 0.35 kg/m² (matches 10oz unprimed cotton duck ≈ 339 gsm; light 8oz ≈ 0.27, heavy 12oz ≈ 0.42).
- Gesso: 0.15 kg/m² per coat, applied as 2 coats (estimated from ~100-125 ml/m²/coat × ~1.4 g/ml × ~70% solids ≈ 100-130 g/m² dried film).
- Paint: 0.08 kg/m² per coat (estimated from a ~50-100µm dry film × ~1.3 g/cm³ ≈ 65-97 g/m²; impasto and palette-knife work add far more).
Frequently Asked Questions
A 60×80cm stretched canvas weighs roughly 0.8-1.5 kg unframed. Large canvases (100×150cm) reach 2-4 kg. A moulding frame, glass or a backing board adds substantially more on top.
Weight drives the hanging hardware (D-rings, cord, wall plugs), the courier band and price, and whether the wall fixing needs a stud or a heavy-duty anchor. Heavy paintings need stronger fixings rated above the total weight, not just the canvas.
A normal coat adds about 80g per square metre once dry, so the default three coats add roughly 0.24 kg to a square-metre canvas. Heavy impasto or palette-knife work can add several times that, which is why the paint weight is adjustable under Advanced.
They are derived estimates, not measured product specs: canvas 0.35 kg/m² matches 10oz unprimed cotton duck (≈339 gsm), gesso 0.15 kg/m² per coat from ~100-125 ml/m² acrylic primer at ~70% solids, paint 0.08 kg/m² from a ~50-100µm dry film, and the stretcher bar from kiln-dried pine (~480 kg/m³). Override any of them under Advanced if you know your exact materials.
