Canvas Weight Calculator

Estimate the weight of a stretched canvas including frame, fabric and paint.

How We Calculate This

Weight is the sum of four components: frame = perimeter × linear bar weight, and canvas, gesso and paint = stretched area × their areal weight. The default areal figures below are derived estimates, not measured product specs — adjust them under Advanced if you know your exact materials.

  • Frame: 0.15 kg/m for bars ≤20mm deep, 0.35 kg/m for deeper bars (estimated from a kiln-dried pine stretcher profile ~38×18mm × pine density ~480 kg/m³ ≈ 0.33 kg/m).
  • Canvas: 0.35 kg/m² (matches 10oz unprimed cotton duck ≈ 339 gsm; light 8oz ≈ 0.27, heavy 12oz ≈ 0.42).
  • Gesso: 0.15 kg/m² per coat, applied as 2 coats (estimated from ~100-125 ml/m²/coat × ~1.4 g/ml × ~70% solids ≈ 100-130 g/m² dried film).
  • Paint: 0.08 kg/m² per coat (estimated from a ~50-100µm dry film × ~1.3 g/cm³ ≈ 65-97 g/m²; impasto and palette-knife work add far more).
