Gesso Coverage Calculator
Calculate how much gesso you need to prime your canvas or panel.
How We Calculate This
Gesso (ml) = (Area x Coats) / 8 x 1000
Standard gesso coverage is approximately 8 m² per litre per coat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Two coats is the minimum. Three coats gives a smoother surface. Sand lightly with 220-grit between coats. For oil painting on canvas, 3 coats is recommended to properly seal the fabric.
Artist-grade gesso covers approximately 8 square metres per litre per coat. Student grade may cover slightly more but with less opacity.
Not recommended for fine art. Gesso provides proper tooth for paint adhesion, correct absorbency, and archival stability. House primer may yellow or crack over time.
