Masking Fluid Calculator — Watercolour Resist

Estimate the amount of masking fluid needed to cover specific areas of your painting.

How We Calculate This

How Masking Fluid Calculation Works

Fluid needed = Masked area x 0.005 ml/cm² x Coats x 1.3 waste

The painting area is multiplied by the percentage you intend to mask. This masked area multiplied by the coverage rate (0.005 ml/cm²) gives the pure fluid needed. A 30% waste allowance covers brush loading, drips and touch-ups.

Note: manufacturers (Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Pebeo) do not publish a ml/cm² figure. The 0.005 ml/cm² default is derived from the standard brush wet-film thickness of about 50 microns (0.05 mm = 0.005 cm), which over 1 cm² equals 0.005 ml. Treat it as a working estimate and adjust it in the advanced options if your application is heavier or lighter.
