Sculpture Wire Calculator — Wire Length & Gauge
Work out the length and gauge of wire needed for wire sculpture.
How We Calculate This
How Wire Length Estimation Works
Wire length = Sculpture height × Complexity factor
The complexity factor ranges from 8× (simple outlines) to 40× (intricate detail). Wire weight is calculated from length, gauge cross-section and the density of your chosen material — aluminium 2.70 g/cm³, steel 7.85 g/cm³ or copper 8.96 g/cm³. Standard coils are 10 metres.
Frequently Asked Questions
A rough guide is 8–40 times the sculpture height, depending on complexity. A simple linear sculpture uses 8×, moderate detail 15×, complex forms 25×, and intricate detailed work 40× or more. This is an estimating heuristic — the real figure depends entirely on your design, so always round up when buying.
For delicate detail work, use 0.8-1 mm wire. For general sculpture, 1.5-2 mm is most versatile. For structural elements, use 2-3 mm. Many sculptors use multiple gauges in one piece.
Aluminium is easier to bend, lighter and does not rust — ideal for most art wire sculpture. Steel is stronger and holds shape better but is harder to work and needs rust protection outdoors (and is roughly 2.9× heavier). Copper is decorative and easy to solder but the heaviest and most expensive. Pick your material in the calculator and the weight estimate updates to suit.
Wrap joining wires around each other tightly. For permanent joints, solder (silver solder for steel). For aluminium, mechanical joining (wrapping, crimping) or epoxy adhesive works best. Welding requires TIG equipment.
Simple: outline forms with minimal internal detail. Moderate: recognisable shapes with some internal structure. Complex: detailed forms with texture and layering. Intricate: highly detailed with fine wireweaving or mesh-like areas.
