Palette Knife Coverage Calculator — Impasto Paint Volume
Calculate impasto paint volume needed for heavy-textured palette knife painting.
How We Calculate This
How Impasto Volume Calculation Works
Paint volume = Impasto area × Depth × Coats × (1 + Wastage %)
The calculator multiplies the canvas area by the coverage percentage to find the impasto area, then multiplies by the texture depth. Wastage covers mixing losses, palette scrapings and paint left on the knife. Tube counts are based on standard 37 ml and 200 ml sizes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Palette knife work uses significantly more paint than brush painting. A medium impasto at 2 mm depth uses roughly 10 times more paint per square centimetre than a standard brushed layer. A 50×60 cm canvas with full impasto coverage can easily use 500-600 ml of paint.
Oil paint holds texture better and stays workable longer, giving more time for thick application. Heavy body acrylics work well but dry faster. Acrylic impasto gels and mediums can extend volume without weakening the paint film. For extreme impasto, oil mixed with cold wax medium is popular.
Oil impasto over 3 mm can take weeks to be touch-dry and months to fully cure. Very thick passages (5 mm+) may take 6-12 months. Acrylic dries much faster — even thick layers are usually firm within a week. Adding drying medium to oils speeds surface drying.
Yes, building in layers is recommended for very thick work. Let each layer partially set before adding the next. For oils, follow the fat-over-lean rule. For acrylics, each layer must be fully dry. Layers reduce the risk of cracking in very thick paint passages.
