How the calculation works
The calculator maps your Kelvin value to a warm/cool bias band:
- Below 2800 K — Very Warm (candle/flame)
- 2800–3500 K — Warm (tungsten/incandescent)
- 3500–4500 K — Slightly Warm (warm fluorescent)
- 4500–5500 K — Neutral (studio/cloudy)
- 5500–7000 K — Cool (daylight/overcast)
- Above 7000 K — Very Cool (deep shade/blue sky)
The complementary temperature is a simple teaching aid, not a measured photographic standard. It reflects your input about the warm–cool midpoint (approximately 12,000 minus the input Kelvin, clamped to 2000–10,000 K) to suggest a contrasting light note for temperature-contrast compositions. Treat it as a starting point for warm-light/cool-shadow decisions rather than a value to match on a colour meter.
