Sketchbook Calculator — Pages & Usage Over Time
Work out how many sketchbook pages you need and estimate usage over time.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates sketchbook usage based on your drawing frequency over time.
Total pages = Pages per week × Number of weeks
Books needed = Total pages / Pages per book
Weeks per book tells you how long each sketchbook will last at your current pace, helping you plan purchases in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Standard sketchbooks range from 40 to 120 pages. For daily practice, a 80-100 page book is common. Heavier paper (150+ gsm) books tend to have fewer pages. Lighter paper (90-110 gsm) books have more.
Aim for at least one page per day if building a daily practice. Professional artists and students often fill 2-5 pages daily. Even quick thumbnail sketches count — the goal is consistent practice, not perfection.
A5 (148 × 210 mm) is the most popular size — it is portable enough to carry daily but large enough for meaningful drawings. A4 is better for studio work, while A6 is ideal for a pocket sketchbook for quick notes.
With dry media (pencil, pen), you can use both sides if the paper is thick enough (120+ gsm). With wet media (markers, watercolour), use one side only to prevent bleed-through. This calculator counts each leaf as one page.
