Gallery Commission Calculator — Your Take-Home Amount
Calculate your take-home amount after gallery commission and VAT.
How We Calculate This
How Gallery Commission Works
Your gross = Selling price - Gallery commission
The gallery takes their percentage from the total selling price. If you are VAT registered, the selling price is treated as VAT-inclusive, so VAT (20% by default) is accounted for out of your gross share. Then subtract material and framing costs to get your true net profit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most UK galleries take 40-50% commission on sales. High-end London galleries may take 50-60%, while smaller regional galleries and art fairs often take 30-40%. Always negotiate and get the split in writing.
You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds the current threshold (£90,000 as of 2025/26). If VAT registered, you charge 20% VAT on your share. Some galleries handle VAT differently — check your contract.
If you provide the artwork framed, your framing costs come out of your share. Include these to see your true net profit. Some galleries frame at their own cost and recoup it from the sale price.
Work backwards from your desired take-home. If you want £200 net and the gallery takes 40%, you need to sell at approximately £333. This calculator helps you find the right price point.
Rates vary by platform. Saatchi Art takes 40% commission on original art (you keep 60%). Artfinder charges 40% on its Premium plan or 45% on its Core plan, plus 20% VAT on that commission (reclaimable if you are VAT registered). Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee plus payment processing (4% + £0.20 for UK sellers), a small listing fee and a UK regulatory fee — roughly 12-16% all-in once VAT on fees is added. Always check the current published rates, as platforms revise them.
